CranioSacral Therapy involves gentle manipulation of the skull bones, sacrum and other bony structures to treat imbalances in the Central Nervous System. There are 22 bones that form the face and skull. Each of these bones is joined at a firm, sort of zipper-like, joint called a suture joint. When pressure builds in these suture joints, pain and other neurological upset can be the result. CST emphasizes concepts such as energy, harmony, balance, rhythm and flow.
CranioSacral therapists detect a "rhythm" in the fluid surrounding, nourishing and protecting an individual's brain and spinal cord. This fluid is called cerebrospinal fluid, or CSF. CSF filters out of special capillaries inside specialized cavities within the brain (the ventricles). CSF then flows through its own special channels before being reabsorbed into the venous return side of the blood stream. It has been said that this rhythm moves about 8 to 11 times each minute. A well trained craniosacral therapist is able to feel the energy and physiology of this rhythm by focusing on parts of the body that are influenced by this constant rhythm of CSF filtration and reuptake. By releasing restrictions in the body that impede the flow of this fluid, the therapist facilitates the full functioning of a client's natural healing abilities. CST is deeply relaxing and energizing. CST can act as powerful tool for increasing mind-body awareness and gaining broader insight to ourselves.
