Chiropractic is a paradigm of health care that is both a manipulative body-based therapy and a health system. Chiropractors work with the musculoskeltal and nervous systems with the aim of diagnosing, treating, and preventing mechanical. The belief is that imbalances within these systems profoundly impact not only structural and mechanical capabilities of the body, but also influence general health.
The premise underlying Chiropractic is that vertebral subluxations, or joint misalignments, impede the functionality of the nervous system and can cause various conditions of decreased overall health. Treatments may include spinal adjustments performed manually by the chiropractor or using a tool such as an activator. Treatments are also frequently nutritional in nature, as chiropractors are well trained in supplementation and general nutrition. Many chiropractors also work closely with personal trainers and massage therapists to maximize the effects of working the skeletal and muscular systems.
In 1895 DD Palmer founded Chiropractic and currently every state in the United States provides for licensure of Chiropractors. Additionally, Chiropractic is practiced in more than 100 countries worldwide. While chiropractors have had to battle their way into the mainstream, many insurance plans now offer coverage for chiropractic services and chiropractic is one of the most widely used CAM services by consumers
