Adjunct Assistant Professor, The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine
Co-founder, The Coalition for Animal and Human Welfare
An interest in public health fueled a change to the human medical field, where Dr. Wagner spent time with OSU Managed Health Care Systems, the Faculty and Staff Wellness Program, The Wellness Collaborative and The OSU Integrative Health and Wellness Initiative. She is currently practicing and teaching integrative veterinary medicine, and is an active public speaker. Her professional interests include the link between interpersonal violence and animal cruelty, human and animal welfare/wellness, and in empowering individuals and communities through animal related programming.
Dr, Wagner recently co-authored a book entitled Through A Dog's Ear: Using Sound to Improve the Health and Behavior of Your Canine Companion.
Veterinarians have long understood the importance of pets in their guardian's lives. They have all had clients with no family other than the pet, and have witnessed how devastating the loss of that animal can be. In many cases, these pets actually become "therapy" animals, providing emotional support when none other exists.
Science is now catching up with this anecdotal evidence on animals' effect on our health and well being. Pets have been shown to reduce heart rate, blood pressure and anxiety. One study revealed that patients with heart disease and arrhythmias were more likely to be alive one year later if they owned a dog. Beck and Glickman wrote in 1987 "all future studies of human health should consider the presence or absence of a pet in the home…as a significant variable. No future study of human health should be considered comprehensive if the animals with which they share their lives are not included."
While pets can positively influence our health, the effect of their illnesses must also be considered. Likewise, when the family is in crisis, the pet will feel the effects.
With this increasing awareness of how pets contribute to our lives, we are now gaining a deeper understanding of what animals teach us about our own lives, and how a synergistic effect is created when humans and animals heal together. Whether it is through animal assisted therapies or animal welfare programs, society is positively affected when we value animals.
Healing Touch for Animals is $72.00.
