Our Philosophy

    Holistic:
relating to or concerned with wholes or with complete systems rather than with the analysis of, treatment of, or dissection into parts

At YOUR-CENTER.com, it is our philosophy that an integrative health network must be based upon:

  • the community in which we live
  • relationships between people
  • empowerment through education
  • respect for the validity of all approaches to health and wellness

An integrative medical model is the key to the YOUR-CENTER.com philosophy. We believe that any truly integrative medical model separates out the different approaches to health care (energy medicine, physical medicine, biological medicine, mind-body healing) but does so in an effort to put them back together again in a healthy way that honors each. Western medicine is, by its very nature, a pieces and parts discipline. Early anatomists in the late 1800s dug up graves with the anticipation of dissecting the bodies to gain further understanding of the many varied pieces and parts that come together as the human body. But when it comes to it, we are more than parts; we are variations on a sum of parts.

To prosect the human body, as YOUR-CENTER.com co-founder Melinda Cooksey does, does not mean one has to reduce it to the parts. A human cadaver is like a wonderful old home that was simply left abandoned one day. Anyone could walk through and know much about what happened there, despite its emptiness. The human body is the same way; it is a perfect blueprint for the soul that lived inside it. While we at YOUR-CENTER.com believe there is a tremendous spiritual universe of things to anticipate, we also believe that each of us is here right now as physical beings in our physical homes (ie. physical bodies). Who we are in these bodies will leave behind a story... our story.

We recognize that it is difficult to be a health care consumer in this day and age. There is access to so much knowledge, but at the same time, our medical model has not kept up with the things we are informing ourselves about. We need to not only have resources for the health and vitality of our families, but we need to know that practitioners have studied rigorously and represent expertise in their fields. Our Western culture has not yet caught up with this, which makes it such that the consumer needs to be at the center of their own health care.

Traditional allopathic medicine has given us much by way of technology, pharmacy, research and economy. But if we are not seeking tests, diagnoses or medicine, it may not be the best choice of avenues to travel when there are so many others available. This educational journey demands a desire to learn. Those who have taken their health care into their own hands know this. The integrative medical model that we strive for not only permits you to be at the middle of you health care, but demands it. Who knows better than you what you need? We all have an 'inner physician' that intuitively knows what we need to do for ourselves. We have so many choices available; we can do nothing, go to our doctor / psychologist / massage therapist / chiropractor / etc., we can pray, we can eat well, we can sleep more, we can engage in movement or we can choose to take it easy. But at the heart of it, all these options share a common goal of keeping us healthy. We all need a system, or at least a place, where all of those options are available for our choosing. For the greater Columbus area, that place is YOUR-CENTER.com.
