Art and Music: The Art of Winter

We haven’t seen much in the way of snow this season. Thankfully, artist Simon Beck offers a timely gift for those who appreciate the sparkling beauty of pure, fresh snow.

10 years ago, Beck followed the call of his creativity and began tracing out simple designs on a frozen lake in a ski resort in France. Now, Beck creates intricate snow motifs using geometrical forms based on mathematical patterns or the sand gardens in Japanese temples.

Beck spends 5-10 straight hours alone in the cold, listening to Beethoven and carefully using his snowshoes to plot out his creations, some of which span areas as large as 3 football fields.

In this videosome of Beck’s most striking snow designs are highlighted before mother nature wipes the slate clean once more.

Modality of the Month: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction

mindfulMindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a program that teaches ancient meditative practices, such as breathing and body-awareness, as well as attention to daily activities to help manage stress, anxiety, depression and chronic pain.

The program uses sensory experience to ground one’s awareness in the present moment, regardless of whether the experience is pleasant, unpleasant or neutral. This present-moment attention reduces the anxiety and stress fueled by discursive thinking (worrying, planning, etc.) and can facilitate deep acceptance and contentment with life as it is.

Mindfulness in Motion is an 8-week mindfulness-based intervention program that offers busy adults pragmatic resiliency tools that can be easily implemented in daily life to enhance well-being and functionality while mitigating the effects of chronic stress.

This program is based on Jon Kabat-Zinn’s Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction program to the UMass Medical Center. This abbreviated version originated and was scientifically proven effective through OSU Department of medicine and is a popular choice for corporate and organizational wellness programs.
